The Bible offers two different explanations for the parable of the fig tree: preservation or unfaithfulness. If the fig was green you could rest in its shade. But what use was a fig tree if it did not have fruit. And seeing from afar a fig tree having leaves, He went to see if perhaps He would find something on it. When He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. The people of the ancient world had no problem understanding this short and informative parable. Today, however, we need some explanations. A fig tree without figs? The fruit of the tree is sweet and delicious and nourishing. People love to serve them to their guests.

The situation involving the cursed fig tree is recorded in two places in the Gospel records — Matthew ; and Mark ; And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if perhaps he might find anything thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for it was not the season of figs. And as they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away from the roots.
We are omitting verses , which provide some transitional information that occurred between the two successive days that are related to this scene. On the second day, as Christ and his disciples passed by the tree, on their way to Jerusalem, it was noticed that the fig tree was completely dead. This compelled Peter, who was speaking on behalf of the others as well cf.

On the way, Jesus is hungry and tries to find some fruit on a fig tree. Fig trees were common alongside roads and houses where they provided shade from the hot sun. The tree was covered in leaves as the new growth was flourishing during the warmer spring days leading up to the Passover festival. Jesus expects to find green unripe figs. Jesus sees the fig tree as a parable representing the Jewish leaders. They, like the tree, make a fine outward show; but they fail to bear the fruit of righteous living.
The disciples are amazed. But Jesus tells them that they will see far more amazing things than this when they learn to pray with greater faith about accomplishing difficult deeds.

I cannot myself feel that either in the matter of wisdom or in the matter of virtue Christ stands quite as high as some other people known to history. I think I should put Buddha and Socrates above Him in those respects.
Though it takes a lot of brass to count oneself morally superior to Jesus, Russell at least takes the story at face value. Not so some preachers and theologians who deny it out of embarrassment. Rather, the Lord found a teachable moment in the traffic patterns of life. In this case, most agree that He performed an action parable, critiquing fruitless religious leaders with a leafy display of ceremony and piety.
And when the disciples wondered at His power to speak destruction, He talked to them of faith. Believers ask it genuinely, reverently, and expectantly, secure in the knowledge that there is a good and honorable answer. The really curious thing is why Mark and Matthew included this story in their Gospels, since it casts Jesus in an unfavorable light and undercuts his supposedly loving character.
